The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission has purchased the Ellis Sheep Company Ranch to manage as a wildlife habitat management area. This will allow the G&F to expand access to the public for hunting and fishing in Johnson and Washakie Counties.

The property is an excellent high-mountain grazing, hunting and fishing ranch and supports healthy populations of antelope, mule deer, elk and several species of grouse. Brian Nesvik, Game and Fish director, said: “Maintaining and expanding access for hunting and fishing is a top priority for Game and Fish. This property not only provides the public with access to previously landlocked, federal land, but it also allows us to effectively manage big game in the area.”

The property borders the Middle Fork of the Powder River and the area is known for its red-wall canyons and excellent fly fishing and hunting. The Middle Fork is one of only 16 blue-ribbon designated trout streams in the State of Wyoming and earned that designation for having 5,000 catchable-sized trout per mile.

This will be the third wildlife habitat management area in the county and the first management area designated in Johnson County since 1970.
