Valentine, Nebraska has a population of 2,820 with total population of Cherry County at approximately 6,148. It is located near the geographic center of the continental United States and is the retail center for an area that contains an estimated 17,000 people. There is an elementary, middle school, high school, and 3 parochial elementary schools. Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) has an expanded campus that serves the area as well. Cherry County Hospital, Valentine Medical Clinic-Family Practice, and Cherry County Clinic-Family Practice all provide healthcare to the area. Other community amenities include a public golf course, several banks, churches, restaurants, historic downtown with many retail stores, veterinary clinics, and two paved and lighted landing strips capable of handling small, private jets with 4,700 and 3,700-foot runways. Basic economic activities include tourism and farming/ranching.

North Platte, Nebraska
North Platte, the county seat of Lincoln County, offers big city amenities, such as the Great Plains Regional Medical Center and the North Platte Regional Airport Lee Bird Field.
